Where you will experience the real Goa!

Travel

It's 7 am and the incessant trilling of a cycle bell assaults the peace and quiet of a village road in Goa. It's Enacio the podar and I rush out of the house to join the locals to greet him and buy my share of bread for the day!

I am in a quiet seaside village in Goa, where I have rented a villa for a few days, as I aim to live and act like a village local.

Betalbatim is a small, quaint little villlage in South Goa. A town laced with infinite stretches of pristine beaches, and strategically located in between Colva and Madgaon.

Dotted with well-kept heritage homes and lovely restaurants, you will appreciate the fact that it is quite non-touristy for a Goan beachside village.

Betalbatim church is a beautiful 18th century building with little worn out corners, and a choir that sings its allelulias right.

The spotless white church is so quaint that one feels like lingering longer there after mass, to absorb the beauty and not hurry away.

The beaches are all yours! Betalbatim’s two beaches are relatively quiet even during the peak of the tourist season. But in the monsoons it is  just you and the raging winds and angry waves crashing on the beach, all this noise heightened by the shrieks of foraging birds.

Feed your creative side If you are creative, Betalbatim will surely speak to your soul. The pretty landscapes provide abundant inspiration. Artists or writers will love the peace and quiet this side of Goa.

On the way to Colva, is Ray’s Atelier located in a 100-year old Goan home. Artist Raymond Pereira lives and works here. His paintings are on display in the front room. He also offers artist residency programs that are much sought after.

Victor Hugo’s Goa Chitra Museum, which everyone visiting South Goa must put on their itinerary.  Within Betalbatim village is artist and musician Eleanor Viegas’ studio and art gallery aptly named Peace Cottage. Her  home/studio has been carefully designed using eco-friendly techniques

If you like Heritage homes, Betalbatim has many beauties to boast of. You could walk around and take in the sights. However, do ask for permission before you click private homes!

Walking around will also take you to some hidden gems. I discovered this beautiful spot on a solo walk!

Food choices are many in Betalbatim. For quick snacks you could try the Anjuna Bakery, or stop by at roadside carts selling homemade steaks made by the village women

Betalbatim is probably best known for Martin's Corner. However, there are other equally amazing restaurants. I also love to just walk into a shack and order the ambot-tik with rice. It is a Goan staple, and the smaller places cook it better!
