Asian Paints Woodtech's Color on Wood brings Furniture Makeover Ideas to Life

Asian Paints has introduced a range of Wood Finishes that finally allows Indians to have Color On their Wood. If you know me well, you know that I hate to throw away a usable piece of furniture, especially if it’s made of good teak wood. My coffee-table makeover is witness to this stubborn decorating streak I possess.

It surfaced again when we were stuck with an extra dining table. For years we had our meals at this cosy 4 seater dining table. Our family size grew from 2 to 4, but we still ate at this table When we entertained, we always served a buffet spread, so the space constraint was never felt. The only time the table seemed small was when our parents and extended family visited. So we finally gave in, and bought a large 8 seater table. And this is how we were left with an extra dining table, that I was reluctant to part with!

So at first, we thought we would use it as a work table in the kids’ room, but the kids just didn’t seem to be using it. So back it came to our dining area, as a sort of hold-everything. I had a vague idea to refurbish it brewing in my head, but it wasn’t until I learned about Woodtech by Asian Paints that I knew for sure what I would transform it to.

I consulted with them, and I was stunned by the sheer range of products and colors they possessed. If you are a woodworker or DIYer in India, a Pandora’s Box of opportunities has just opened up for you!

I loved the fact that they have a “kit”, an A-Z of Color on Wood services, from wood filler and insulators that went with each Woodtech Palette wood finish to primers and sealers.

I started work on the table. I stripped off the old veneer and I sanded it to a smooth finish. I sent the above picture of my table to Woodtech by Asian Paints, and told them exactly what I had in mind. And they put my idea into a 3D rendering which really appealed to me. You see, I thought I would convert it into a chess table, with distressed Feroze blue legs and a chequered table top – a contemporary-kitsch look, that I had been wanting to implement for a while now. This is the 3D rendering and the chess squares wouldn’t align properly, but when I do it, the chess squares would have to be a correct 8 x 8. Masking tape will help me get it right. The legs would also be sanded down to lighten the colour and achieve a distressed look.

This is the method I will follow to transform my old wooden square table, into a chess table with Feroze blue legs.

These are the steps for the table top

1)      Insulate the wood (substrate) with Polyester Insulator.

2)      Sand and apply 2 coats of Polyester white Sealer.

3)      Dry this overnight, then sand to smoothen out the surface.

4)      Create a chess board Pattern with Masking tape / vinyl

5)      Apply Emporio Black Matt to create a chess board effect

6)      Remove tape & sand lightly.

7)      Apply Clear top coat (Polyester gloss, Emporio Clear gloss/ matt) as finish required.

Incidentally, Woodtech Palette Emporio is heat resistant and stain resistant and has a non-yellowing property, which is so great for tabletops! so I am also considering doubling up the utility of this table as a bar table, or a drinking game table – with a chequered board, the possibilities are endless!

And now since painting on wood is so easy, and the finish is so great with properties like heat resistance, stain resistance, non yellowing, solvent and scratch resistance, one has just no excuse to create their accent piece.

And just as I was winding this post up, I recd. another teal green 3D rendering of my table from them. Needs a good distress finish, yes, and a slightly different shade of green maybe, but I am in two minds now – green or blue? 🙂

  1. Cool stuff 🙂

  2. How cool! You have a lovely blog Sharon. Glad I chanced upon it. Keep the ideas flowing.

  3. There are really alot of good solid pieces of furniture that have old and cracking veneers. People just throw them out without realizing that many have good wood underneath. Good for you. I prefer the blue. 😉
