Aluminium or uPVC windows? An unbiased report

Introduction

The beautiful views and the delightful balcony space | Aluminium or uPVC Windows

You know, setting up my studio space has been and is still, a lot of learning, unlearning and relearning! Take windows for example. I am particular about the way they look, because at my studio, they will frame beautiful views and also set the tone for the delightful balcony space that I envision. I found out, over the course of my research, that there are many things to consider when choosing between aluminium and uPVC windows.

For instance, you need to decide whether you want a cheaper option or something more secure. Then there’s the matter of sound insulation, maintenance costs and how much heat retention each type of window provides.

Aesthetics

I run a decor blog, so I am not going to neglect aesthetics. uPVC frames are generally thick, and less pleasing to look at visually. On the other hand, the sleek, slim frames in aluminium, especially if you love the black window look in your home, are drool worthy! With white window frames however, I don’t mind uPVC – especially if the home interiors too have lots of white accents, it tends to blend in and look less jarring. The thickness too gets more or less camouflaged in this case.

If you love wood finish on your windows, many Indian brands now offer lots of natural wood looks such as mahogany, oak and teak on their window frames. However, I am so in love with black windows that this feature meant nothing to me!

Costing less

Aluminium windows are more expensive, but more energy efficient and more durable than uPVC ones.

They also have a much higher level of resistance to UV rays.

Maintenance

Aluminum windows are more expensive to maintain. In comparison to uPVC windows, aluminum requires a higher maintenance budget. This is because aluminum components tend to corrode faster and require more frequent cleaning and polishing than their uPVC counterparts. As a result, you will have to spend more on maintenance costs over time if you choose an aluminum window for your house or apartment building.

uPVC windows are much easier to repair and maintain than Aluminium ones as well! They can be repaired easily by replacing damaged parts like frames or panels with new ones from any local hardware store in India (or any other country). With this option available at our disposal, there’s no need for homeowners who want something less complicated when it comes time for repairs or replacements later down the line!

Security Vs Strength

uPVC windows are more secure. They’re more resistant to attack, and can be easily protected by locking them. Aluminium windows are not as secure because they do not lock (however, in India you can always opt for that ubuiquitous security door that collapses when not in use), nor do they have any way of keeping intruders out of your home.

That said, aluminium windows are stronger! Stronger in terms of durability of the material. Confusing, eh?

Heat retention

uPVC windows are better for the environment. They are more secure, energy efficient and durable.

uPVC windows have better heat retention than aluminium windows meaning you can keep your home cooler in summer and warmer in winter without losing any heat through the window frames or framing.

Sound insulation

Sound insulation is a measure of how well a material prevents sound from passing through it. This can be measured in decibels, which are units that measure the amount of noise reduction for any given material. Sound insulation, also to a large extent depends on the glass used – and believe me, that is another topic altogether as there is so much to choose from!

Aluminium and uPVC windows offer different levels of sound insulation, so there’s no need to compromise on either one! It’s important to remember that when looking at options for your home or business, you’ll want something that will not only reduce noise but also keep your family safe from harmful wavelengths such as UV rays and electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Conclusion

With all of this information, you should now feel confident in choosing the right window for your home. It’s important to keep in mind that these decisions are based on personal preference and lifestyle choices. For me, personally, Thick black frames are not as pleasing as thin ones, but when the underlining choice is about a sustainable approach, one has to make exceptions! I hope I have given you some great resources that will help guide you through the process!
