TOUR THIS 100-YEAR OLD MUMBAI HOME

VILLA RASHMI, IN MALAD, MUMBAI IS SURPRISINGLY WELL-MAINTAINED!

By SHARON DSOUZA

Mumbai's monsoons did not stop us, and we spent a few interesting hours in this old villa in Malad. Come along!

Manibhai, an architect by profession, came to Mumbai from Bhadran to earn a living and build an empire with real estate. He is best known for bagging the sub contract to build Mumbai's Marine Drive. It was at a similar time that he built this house too!

KEY FEATURES OF THIS HOUSE

BUILT IN THE SPANISH STYLE

ITALIAN MOSAIC FLOORING

THE IMAGE OF GODDESS LAKSHMI IS INCORPORATED INTO THE CAST IRON GRILLES

15000 SQ.FT TEAK WOOD ROOF

Manibhai's youngest son Haresh Patel now lives here. The Defence Ministry of India requisitioned the Estate during the World Wars and returned to the family in 1987. From the last 5 years, Haresh's daughter Deval Patel has been restoring it section by section to its original glory.

The living areas are on the first floor leading in from beautiful wrap-around corridors that still feature the original tiles and beautiful wood work. The furniture here once belonged to the Nizam of Hyderabad, who defaulted on his payments to Manibhai and offered his furtniture instead.

The bedrooms are beautiful odes to the past, with antique beds and other old furniture pieces.

This is the South Indian themed bedroom, complete with an unjal and Tanjore paintings!

An old fireplace and a decorated mantlepiece exude Victorian charm!

The villa has a mind bloggling variety of old Spanish and Italian tiles!

The old tiles add so much beauty to every room! This is Haresh Patel's office space on the ground floor level

Speaking of tiles, isn't this staircase absolutely stunning?

Old things like original switchboards and original brass fittings on doors add infinite charm to Villa Rashmi!

The furniture is authentic antique furniture, that belonged to the Nizam of Hyderabad. When the Nizam defaulted on payments to Manibhai, he was offered furniture in lieu of cash.

The balconies and verandahs  are gorgeous little havens by themselves.
